AgCert Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction Methodology
Gains International Approval
AgCert Progresses in Creation and Trade of Certified Emission Reductions

AgCert International LLC (AgCert), a company with a unique process for creating agriculturally sourced greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reductions, has announced that its methodology has been approved by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Executive Board, which released the methodology for global deployment to enable the production and consistent scaling of Certified Emission Reductions (CERs).

The UNFCCC established the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) Executive Board (E.B.) to oversee management of the CDM process, including implementation of GHG reduction projects in developing countries. The Executive Board facilitates the establishment of sustainable projects that reduce the emissions of harmful greenhouse gases, considered by many to be the primary cause of global warming and climate change, while promoting sustainable development in these countries. These emission reductions are called certified emission reductions, or CERs, representing one metric tonne of (reduced emissions of) carbon dioxide equivalent. CERs are one of the most cost-effective means for industrial emitters to satisfy their GHG compliance requirements.

The CDM Framework provides for regular meetings of the E.B.’s Methodology Panel in order to evaluate GHG baseline/monitoring methodologies. During its most recent meeting, the Methodology Panel recommended to the E.B. that it approve AgCert’s methodology, which avoids both methane and nitrous oxide emissions via enhancements of animal waste management systems, for use in agricultural applications worldwide. Of fourteen methodologies assessed by the Methodology Panel last month only AgCert’s methodology was recommended for approval, indicating the panel’s recognition of the environmental and economic sustainability of AgCert’s methodology. The E.B. accepted the Methodology Panel’s recommendation, making AgCert’s methodology only the 16 th ever to be approved.

Today we are creating CERs from farms and farm systems in Brazil and Mexico; in the coming months in other locations. Our near-term objective is to use this methodology to generate emission reductions from eligible agricultural sources all over the world.”

AgCert works with farms to modify manure management practices in order to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases (GHGs), including methane and nitrous oxide, which are believed to be a major cause of global warming. AgCert’s technologies enable it to quantify these GHG emission reductions and to represent these reductions in the form of GHG emission reductions or “offsets.” These offsets can be sold to industrial companies to meet their GHG emissions compliance requirements.
